Very good. Hibachi and Sushi both great every time.

New owners, new decor. Awesome sushi rolls! I personally recommend the unagi don(grilled eel over rice). That's the BEST eel I've ever taste in my life! If u like sour flavor, order the Palapala. It's tuna with avocado in a cup. It's pretty and very tasty! I ordered crunchy tuna roll, rainbow roll, California roll. All of them are great. Their soup is delicious too. They also have hibachi tables. Nice environment. I think it's a great place to go to hanging with friends.

Found a surprisingly quiet dining room here on a busy holiday weekend night. At first we thought we would have a hibachi table to ourselves but a family of seven popped in last minute and filled it up. Good thing too as I think our chef liked performing for a crowd. This place is all about the show and less so about the food. The first course of soup was actually very good. Served piping hot and with more noodles than I usually see was a high point of our meal. Next up was their salad with ginger dressing. It bordered on also being a soup with the amount of dressing in there but it too was tasty and enjoyable. Things went downhill from here though. They only serve a single sauce (yum yum?) with your meal. Most similar spots also provide a ginger sauce for the meats. The fried rice was quite bland and lacked adequate seasoning. It needed a lot more teriyaki and soy sauce added. The cook also made too much as most everyone else at the table ordered steamed rice. He filled half of my plate with several pounds of it. My filet was cooked to the right temperature but again lacked seasoning and would have been nice served with some mushrooms.

I haven't been to Samurai since before it changed owners. While it looks like the old Chizu and reminds me of where I grew up, there are definitely some added bonuses that I don't ever remember finding at the previous inhabitant. We were a full table of 8 and decided to sit at the hibachi table for my bro's birthday. I knew what I was going to get (shrimp, as always) but I got to change it up a bit with my order. I got miso soup, a seaweed salad and noodles (instead of rice). Samurai is the first place I know of to offer Yakisoba noodles instead of the traditional fried rice. Our chef was a lot of fun and jumped right into playing along with my family's crazy antics. There was plenty of food and I think every couple left with a to-go box of leftovers. I perused through the sushi pictures on my way home, so I'll definitely have to try that the next time I'm in the mood.

We ate dinner last night with a party of 10. We requested the cook who seemed to be having lots of fun with his tables. When he got to the table he made several racial slurs, and followed them up by spelling out B-I-T-C at me. We tried to stop him and told him he had gone too far being that we had two children (ages 11 and 13) at the table. He continued with sexual comments towards several women at the table. The waitress who was very nice but clearly uncomfortable encouraged us to complain. Then we quickly left and I spoke with the manager, who seemed totally unconcerned. We have eaten there on multiple occasions for years. Needless to say, we will not be back.

Place have awful service!!! We waited to have a table (2 person) for 40 mins which I know can happened on weekends but the one that is not acceptable is waiting for 10 mins before someone came to our table for orders. It took more than an hour before we can get our food. The place is not that busy when we sat down and got our table. They don't clear the table for used dishes from appetizer. The food was average and I don't think it is worth for the wait. All in all we spent our time there for 2.5 hours. it took only 15mins for us to eat the food and the rest our all the wait.

Haven't been to this place since it was called 'Chizu'! It looks like the place has been completely renovated and I understand it's a totally different owner/management. We had such a great dinner! Food was on point and out hibachi cook was off the chain! Kept us entertained with his continuous jokes! There were 7 total in our party with 2 being kids and ALL were very happy with the good and entertainment! :) I ordered sushi - dynamite, the rainbow roll and the spicy salmon roll -- all were prepared nice and fresh. Everyone Else ordered ordered from the hibachi menu--- see pictures I've uploaded. :) no negative comments just yum!

My order: Seaweed salad - good, hard to mess up Philly roll - great Mango sake - thought it would be hot sake and hated the taste, couldn't tell that it was mango flavored Water - had to have been tap Hubby order: Salad that comes with meal - vert heavy on ranch dressing Hibachi steak with white rice and veggies- not enough steak but tasted good

AMAZING! My fiancé loves the hibachi and I love that any sushi roll they will make with NO rice. It's Still really flavorful without all the rice filler. We love this place!

There are few times in life I copy the opening statement of yelp but this place is a ghost town!!! We came in and they were blasting old Miley songs. The soup was good, the Miley was better!!!!

As I first timer, I was expecting it be like every other Japanese Steak House. I was right except there were some qualities about Samurai that I really enjoyed over other similar restaurants. This is a hidden gem in Jacksonville. The wait staff was excellent! We made reservations, but we would have been ok without them. We heard a chef start singing "Let It Go" after a little girl got scared from the grill fire and started crying. She loved it and stopped crying immediately! We arrived earlier than the rest of our party so we enjoyed a drink at the bar. They have 2 Japanese beers on draft and many American beers are offered in the bottle. They also have liquor. The bar area also had a tv. Once we were seated, we ordered and the food started coming out immediately. We all order hibachi and one couple ordered sushi which they said was delicious. All of the food was excellent. Our chef was very entertaining. I would definitely recommend to others.

This was our first and last time here. There were two tables seated when we arrived and it took 45 min for them to bring our rolls. The miso soup was fine and the Gyoza just ok. The rolls were not impressive in appearance, creativity, or flavor. In fact, the shrimp was old. My rolls tasted like chlorine. I had water to drink which I seriously doubt was filtered because it had an odd taste. I wish I ordered chicken fried rice or something on the "safer" side because I'm concerned that the food overall may not be fresh. Never again.

Samurai gets my vote for best sushi at the beach. Sit in the bar area or dining room for a quick meal, or go all out on a traditional hibachi dinner. It's all great here. A group of us rolled in for dinner Friday night past the point of starvation. We wanted to watch the Jags game while we ate, and the staff accommodated us quickly by pulling tables together in the bar area and simply handing over the remote. Don't mind if I do! We ordered sake all around and the server happily obliged members of the group who wanted to "bomb" theirs. For my meal I started with the Tuna Tataki, an appetizer that's available in some form at most Japanese restaurants. At Samurai it's no frills; just fresh, juicy strips of Ahi Tuna with sauce and scallions. I highly recommend using your ginger and wasabi for this dish! The crispness of the ginger, quick spice of the wasabi and heavenly freshness of the tuna compliment each other so well I was licking my chopsticks! For sushi I went with the Volcano Roll because it comes out in a flaming bowl. Do I need a better reason than that!? Such a fun presentation, with the flavor to back it up. Eel and avocado make up the inside while seared scallops top off this tasty creation. Just yum! Our drinks were never empty and we left with full stomachs and smiling faces. Another great night at Samurai!

The habachi chef was good, talkative, funny and cooks delicious!!! The scallops shrimps were all delicious! Fried rice was so yummy, better than the yakisoba noodles !
(5)Christopher C.
This was the worst experience we have ever had in a restaurant. We waited 30 minutes even with a reservation. People were getting up and leaving the restaurant as we waited. This should have been our first clue that this place sucked. Once we were seated we waited another 20 minutes before our cook arrived. While he was cooking he reached up and switched the light on and off with the cooking utensil and continued using it to cook with. We had to ask multiple times for drink refills. And the restrooms were deplorable. Both bathrooms smelled horrible.

I really like the sushi here, the dynamite and fried ahi tuna roll... mmmmm SO YUMMY!. I usually don't like my dynamite rolls all huge and packed with asparagus. The sushi chefs here make them on the thinner side, easier to eat and just tastes way better. And it's on a bed of seaweed salad, one of my faves! The ahi tuna roll is SO so good! The tuna tastes so fresh. The clear soup is delish as well, it doesn't taste like ramen which I flippin despise when sushi restaurants pull that. Aside from delicious sushi, the place itself is nice, clean and modern looking. I always think that sushi is the same everywhere, but I think Samurai's got the best sushi at the beach for sure :)

I love going to Samurai during my lunch break. I usually order off the sushi specials, but today I tried the sashimi appetizer and it was great!
(5)Holly B.
I've never been disappointed at Samurai. We usually going for lunch on the weekends and sit at a table in the bar area. Everything is always extremely fresh. I usually get a roll and the scallop and filet minon hibachi entree. The lunch entrees are very affordable and I usually have leftovers to take home. The scallops are huge and you get a lot of them. The food comes out fast and the wait staff is very attentive.
(5)Shelley S.
First time in since new owners....all looks the same inside. Friendly fun staff. Awesome hitachi table fun. I ordered the hitachi scallops. My scallops were cooked perfectly, the fried rice and veggies were as well. Plenty of food, so you won't leave hungry.

Ate here last night with some friends. The restaurant has a good ambiance. Typical Japanese hibachi grill. Food was good; prices average for this style of dining. I have a couple other Japanese places in Jax I'd put ahead of it but overall a good time.

Took the family over Halloween Weekend and sat at the sushi bar. Great! We normally sit at the hibachi tables and always have a blast. Sake all night long!! Yes, that is a saying, not a reality! Someone has to drive............ We always look forward to going and I highly recommend them.

Samurai Japanese Steak House has opened in the former site of Chizu. Just down from Beach Hut. The entirely new decor will be familiar to former Chizu diners--bar to the left, adjacent hibachi tables, and sushi bar to the right. I started off dinner with a large (16 oz) bottle of Saporo. The menu price was $7, but I was only charged $5.50 so it was either happy hour even though it was after 7pm on a Friday, or part of a promotion for the new restaurant. We started off with the best part of the meal, a squid salad appetizer, then enjoyed a salmon skin roll ($4), volcano roll ($12), an age tofu app ($4.50), and age Gyoza app ($4). The volcano roll had an interesting presentation with an actual fire in the middle of the plate, but the rolls themselves were disappointing. The salmon skin roll was well liked by those that like salmon skin roll which isn't to my taste. As was the tofu app which all I can say is, "Why tofu anything?" The restaurant is clean and the employees all very friendly. I'll be trying Samurai again.

I love the sushi here and the filet mignon hibachi. My favorites for the sushi are the tiger I roll and the dragon roll the quality is always very good and it tastes fresh. I highly recommend

Stopped in here for a quick lunch and was pretty impressed. Food was great and sushi chef was the man. He made me whatever I wanted based on the freshest fish. Solid joint.

I love this place! I go there all the time and, let me say - excellent service, yummy sushi and great environment! Not to mention the excellent beach location.. It's clean, welcoming and the sushi is great. I go there every week. Ask for Independence roll, even though it is not on the menu
(5)Bridgette D.
A great experience! The hibachi chef was entertaining and very friendly. Sushi was delicious and fresh.
(5)Debbie N.
Sushi is beautiful. Service has been great both times I've eaten there. Sushi bar is where its at, for sure! I'm a diehard Chizu fan, now there's two great places for sushi in Jax Beach!

Let me start off with this: I have eaten at many Japanese restaurants from miami to boston and I have eaten at so many japanese places around jacksonville and this place is by far the worst place i have ever eaten at. So with that being said lets start with the pricing. I went for lunch and my boyfriend decided he wanted to eat more so he got the dinner portion and let me tell you for $10 more there better be a damn difference between the portions and there was not so please dont waste your money. Now, moving on to flavor, I was excited to go here because its new and I love trying out new places but the first thing i got was my clear soup and it tasted like a dirty sock had been boiled in water. It was disgusting! Not enough soy sauce could cover up the terrible flavor from the soup. We also ordered sushi and the sushi was presented okay but they completely lacked flavor! It was the worst sushi rolls i have ever had. My hibachi steak we perfectly cooked but again, completely bland and no flavor. I wanted to eat my steak but i had to drown it in shrimp sauce to get some flavor. I wish that i was over exaggerating here but I really dont think i am. So if you want go ahead and try them out and then post your own review but as for me i will not be going here again.

The sushi is really inventive and beautifully plated at this place, which is a nice change for the beach! The service was really great - super friendly sushi chefs. I will be back!

I absolutely love Samurai! I've been to this restaurant about once a week since it first opened, and am pleasantly and consistently surprised every time. The staff are super friendly. We love our favorite waitress Sophia. The food is always delicious, and well-presented. They have completely remodeled the inside (waaaaay better than Chizu!) and did a great job with the decor. I grew up with Chizu. in fact, my first sushi experience was there, so I was hesitant to say how much better this place is, but it's just a fact. Well done Samurai! I'm sure I will see you guys later this week for sure!!
(4)Brett S.
I'm at a loss as to what sushi the other reviewers enjoyed. I sampled about 5 different rolls here and each was bland and boring. The rice was an embarrassment to sushi--I've had better instant rice. Nothing on the sushi list was interesting or original. I can't speak for the hibachi, but the sushi was really below average.
(2)Chris R.
Ate at Samurai in Jacksonville Beach two nights ago - where the old Chizu was - all in all, the food was okay, but the service was absolutely abysmal. It was nearly 1:45 minutes before they came to start cooking and there were only 2 or 3 tables in use - this was a Thursday night so there was no excuse to be so slow. A total of 3 hours from start to finish. The absolute slowest service ever at a Japanese place and the owner/manager didn't even care. I would've expected some type of comp to go along with it, but not even that. I won't be going back.
(1)Chris N.
Love the amazing service, the decor is great, and the filet mignon from the habachi grill is yummy!
(4)Timmortal D.
They feed you until you can't think anymore. Other hibachi seafood places give you the salad, soup, meat, and rice, but this place also had noodles and even offered us free dessert. The sushi was also fantastic. I had to be carted out in a wheelbarrow.
(5)E K.
The grill table food was terrible and our waitress was awful. Stick to the sushi at lunch only.
